In a world where most things are instant, why not consider making instant PeopleSoft reports? Using web technologies, instant PeopleSoft reports can be created. Users do not have to run the report on the Process Scheduler and spend time waiting for the report to run and retrieving it. The report can be displayed on the page as soon as you enter search keys and hit the OK button on the search window. If it is a report with few pages it would probably display faster than the time it takes to display the search list. This is like a ‘No-click' report; you don't have to click a “Run” button to run the report. This technology can take PeopleSoft reporting to new heights, may even replace SQRs and can run lot faster than SQRs.
One thing we must always keep in mind is delivering what the customer needs. If our end-users don't like our reports, they won't use them no matter how much effort we exerted. When it comes to the beauty contest of reports, the one with the best GUI interface always wins. Using browser scripts, PeopleSoft reports look easy and pretty with the mix and match of colors, fonts and image files we use to display the information. Even though it takes time and effort for the developer to create these reports, the effort is worth the ROI.
My example in Figure 1 demonstrates an attractive report using browser scripts like ScriptX, HTML and JavaScript. The user just has to enter the search parameter and click the OK button. That's it; no other steps. The report will instantly display on the page.
